CSWE Accredited Online Master of Social Work (MSW) Programs

Students interested in pursuing a Master of Social Work (MSW) online have several options to consider as they research potential programs. Currently, there are 24 schools that offer online MSW degree programs designed for students who have not earned a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) (also known as traditional MSW programs). In the United States, the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) is the only organization that accredits MSW programs. All schools listed on OnlineMSWPrograms.com offer CSWE accredited online MSW programs.

(For students who have already earned a BSW from a CSWE accredited undergraduate program, we have compiled a comprehensive list of schools offering Advanced Standing Online MSW Programs complete with program information and admission requirements.)

There are several reasons to consider pursuing a MSW degree. For professionals who have already earned a BSW and work in the field, a MSW is required to become a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) in all 50 states (specific licensing requirements vary by state). In addition, many states also require a MSW to become a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW). For professionals who are looking to make a career change, a MSW provides the education and background needed to enter the field of social work.

Online MSW programs are ideal for working professionals and for students who do not live near a campus-based program. Although there are only 24 schools that currently offer a traditional standing online MSW program (compared to 235 campus programs), students still have several options to consider as they research graduate schools. Types of CSWE Accredited Online Master of Social Work Degree Programs

Unfortunately for prospective students, there is not a single definition for online programs and the term “online” is often used for programs that actually combine online and campus instruction (i.e. hybrid MSW programs). On OnlineMSWPrograms.com, we classify any program that requires two or fewer visits to the campus per year an online program.

Please note: All online MSW programs require field education at a local health services agency, even if they do not require students to visit the campus during the program.

  • Online MSW Programs with Classes 100% Online: 100% online MSW programs have no campus residency requirements, and therefore do not require students to visit the campus during the program. Currently, 18 of the 24 available programs are 100% online. Schools in the listings below offer 100% online MSW programs unless otherwise indicated.
  • Online MSW Programs with a Campus Requirement: Currently, 6 of the 24 online MSW programs require students to make a limited number of visits to the campus during the program. These programs are clearly noted in the list of schools below. Students who wish to have some face-to-face interaction with teachers and classmates should definitely consider these programs. They also give students the opportunity to connect more to the campus and university.

For students who are not entirely sure that a 100% online MSW program is right for them, some hybrid MSW programs have limited face-to-face classes and could be a good option as well. To find a list of schools offering hybrid programs by state, check out our Hybrid MSW Programs page for more information.

CSWE Accredited Online MSW Programs: Full-Time versus Part-Time Programs

In addition to available concentrations, students also have the option to pursue a MSW online as a full-time or part-time student. While full-time programs can typically be completed in two years, they are not ideal for working professionals as they require a considerable time commitment for both coursework and field education. The majority of full-time programs and several part-time programs use a cohort model of instruction where students proceed through the program together as a group. However, a few part-time programs do have flexible class schedules where students can vary their course loads each semester.

  • Full-Time Online MSW Programs: For students interested in pursuing an online MSW full-time, there are currently 10 schools that offer accredited full-time programs. These programs typically take two years to complete. Due to the course load and field education requirements, most full-time programs do not recommend students to work full-time while pursuing their degree.
  • Part-Time Online MSW Programs: Part-time programs are a better option for working professionals and can take two and a half to four years to complete, depending on the program. Currently, there are 21 schools that offer part-time accredited online MSW programs.

Independent of the schedule, the majority of online MSW graduate programs require 60 to 66 credit hours to graduate (for schools that are on the semester system). Some universities have multiple start dates, including Fall, Spring and/or Summer, while others may only start the program one semester per year.

Online MSW Degree Programs: Concentration Options

Both campus-based and online MSW programs offer different concentrations to enable students to specialize in a particular field of social work after graduation. Unfortunately, the concentration options for online MSW programs are much more limited when compared to campus-based programs. The majority of online MSW programs only offer one of two concentrations: Advanced Generalist or Clinical Social Work Practice. In comparison, some campus programs offer as many as 10-12 concentrations. The University of Southern California (USC) offers the most concentration options – with a total of five – for their online MSW program.

Even though online MSW programs offer fewer concentrations, students can still find a variety of different specialization options. For example, some of the Advanced Generalist programs focus on a specific demographic, including:

  • Urban Family Practice
  • Social work for the Hispanic community
  • Working with Rural and Indigenous Communities

In addition, a couple of programs offer concentrations that focus on children and family social work or on administrative leadership. Finally, some online MSW programs allow students to further specialize by taking courses in advanced topics such as gerontology or alcohol and drug counseling.

For students interested in becoming a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), licensing requirements are determined by state-specific social work licensing boards and vary by state. Therefore, students need to review their state specific licensing requirements to ensure that the program they choose will meet the requirements needed for licensing.

Students who know they want to pursue a career in clinical social work should definitely look at programs that offer a clinical social work concentration. However, depending on the state, a MSW program with a clinical concentration may not be required to become a LCSW. In some states, students may pursue an Advanced Generalist program and still meet the education requirements for licensing. For other states, students may be required to complete additional classes post-graduation.
