Saint Leo University’s School of Education & Social Services offers an online MSW program with a concentration in advanced clinical practice. This program is designed to prepare students for advanced clinical social work through courses and field placements that engage and strengthen their abilities to counsel individuals and groups, help clients manage specific social issues such as discrimination and oppression, and conduct evidence-based research. Saint Leo offers two full-time online MSW options–a two-year traditional track, and a one-year advanced standing MSW track that requires a Bachelor of Social Work. For the traditional track, Saint Leo also offers a three-year part-time program. Saint Leo University’s online MSW programs only accept students residing in Georgia, Florida, and Virginia.
Saint Leo University’s online MSW program features synchronous instruction, meaning students attend classes in real-time using a webcam each week. Real-time classes are typically held in the evenings on weekdays. Programs with synchronous instruction may be ideal for students who want the feel of a traditional campus-based program without the need to travel to and from campus. Saint Leo also requires students to attend an on-campus seminar during the summer, which lasts for one weekend. This seminar allows students to meet both professors and fellow classmates in person.
Students in the traditional two-year program or part time three-year program must complete four semesters of field education (for a total of 1,024 hours), while students in the advanced standing program need to complete two semesters (for a total of 512 hours). Saint Leo matches students to agencies, and sets up interviews between students and the agencies so both parties can determine if it is a good match. Field placements are determined through conversations between students, field faculty, and agencies.
Students are expected to complete 16 hours of field education per week, during normal daytime working hours. Students who already work at an organization that could qualify as an agency may wish to explore and potentially apply to Saint Leo’s Employment-Based Field Education option. This option allows students to complete one of their two field placements at their current place of employment, assuming certain criteria are met (restriction may apply).
When considering applicants for admission, Saint Leo University’s online MSW program takes into account each individual candidate’s academic background, as well as his or her commitment to social service through work or volunteer pursuits. Applicants must submit their academic transcripts, a resume, a personal statement, and three letters of recommendation.
Saint Leo University’s online MSW program is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Additionally, Saint Leo University is regionally accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
