What are the Admission Requirements for Online MSW Programs?

To apply to an accredited online Master of Social Work (MSW) program, you need a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university. That is the one admission criterion every accredited master's program must include under the Council on Social Work Education's 2022 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS), and CSWE's accreditation FAQs (updated July 2026) confirm the degree can be in any discipline. Beyond that minimum, the same FAQs say it is "completely within the purview of each accredited social work program" to set its own admission criteria.

If you plan to become licensed, also check that a program fits your state's rules: the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) notes that social work license requirements are set by each state (as of August 2026), and you can find your board in our list of social work state licensing boards.

Eligibility Requirements for Online MSW Programs

Not every online MSW program can enroll students from every state. Under federal rules, a school that offers distance education to students in a state where it has no physical location must meet that state's requirements for legally offering it, or be covered by a reciprocity agreement, and it determines each student's state at initial enrollment (34 CFR 600.9(c), eCFR, current as of October 2026).

For programs that prepare students for a licensed occupation, federal rules also require schools that take part in federal student aid to determine that the program satisfies the educational requirements for licensure in the state where a distance-education student is located, or, for a student who enrolls on or after July 1, 2024, in the state where the student says they intend to work (34 CFR 668.14(b)(32), eCFR, current as of October 2026). Before you apply, ask the admissions office whether the program enrolls students from your state and whether it meets your state's educational requirements for social work licensure.

Our program listings summarize the requirements each school publishes. Confirm your eligibility with the school's admissions office before you apply.

Admission Requirements for Traditional Online MSW Programs

Applicants who don't qualify for advanced standing (explained below) apply for the traditional MSW and complete the full curriculum. CSWE's Interpretation Guide (version 7.21.2026, p. 82) requires each accredited master's program, including online MSW programs, to have admission criteria, a process for evaluating applications and a process for notifying applicants, and to list every admission criterion it uses. Meeting a program's published minimums doesn't guarantee admission: the guide's examples of admission decisions include acceptance, contingent or conditional admission, a waitlist and denial, and CSWE's Board of Accreditation does not regulate admission or enrollment caps (pp. 82–83). If you fall short of one minimum, ask the admissions office how it evaluates applications like yours before you apply.

The only admission criterion CSWE requires of every accredited MSW program is a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university (2022 EPAS, Accreditation Standard M4.1.2). Every other requirement is set by the program itself, so read the admission criteria each program publishes before you apply.

Note: Whether to ask for GRE or MAT scores is each program's own decision; CSWE's Interpretation Guide (version 7.21.2026, p. 79) lists making standardized test scores optional, or dropping them, among the admissions practices a program can adopt. You can compare online MSW programs that don't require the GRE.

Work experience doesn't replace coursework: under CSWE's 2022 EPAS (Accreditation Standard 4.1.5), accredited programs don't grant social work course credit for life experience or previous work experience. Ask each program whether it requires or prefers human services experience, and what a conditional admission would require of you.

BSW-to-MSW advanced standing is open to graduates of social work bachelor's programs accredited by CSWE (2022 EPAS, Accreditation Standard M4.1.3). Under the EPAS's first footnote, that includes degrees recognized through CSWE's International Social Work Degree Recognition and Evaluation Service (ISWDRES) and degrees covered by CSWE's agreements with international social work accreditors; the Interpretation Guide (version 7.21.2026, p. 85) names Canadian degrees accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE). Each program sets its own advanced standing policy and can add requirements; the guide (p. 86) gives a minimum GPA or a "B" or better in a social work course as examples of how programs make sure students don't repeat content they have already completed, and CSWE neither endorses nor prohibits limits on how long ago you earned your degree. Visit our Advanced Standing Online MSW Programs page for more information.

How to check a program before you apply

  1. Confirm the program's status in CSWE's program directory, which lists master's programs that are accredited, in candidacy or in pre-candidacy.
  2. Ask whether the program enrolls students from your state and meets your state's educational requirements for social work licensure, which federal rules under 34 CFR 668.14(b)(32) require schools that take part in federal student aid to determine.
  3. Read the admission criteria the program publishes and compare them with your GPA, transcript and prerequisite courses.
  4. If you hold a social work bachelor's degree, ask about the program's advanced standing requirements, including any GPA minimum or limit on how long ago you graduated.
  5. Ask how and where field placements are arranged; accredited master's programs require at least 900 hours of field education under the 2022 EPAS (Accreditation Standard 3.3.3).

Frequently asked questions about MSW admission

Can I apply to an online MSW program with a bachelor's in psychology?

Yes. CSWE's master's admission standard requires a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university and doesn't name a major (2022 EPAS, Accreditation Standard M4.1.2). A psychology degree doesn't qualify you for advanced standing, though: CSWE's accreditation FAQs state that an accredited baccalaureate social work degree is required for advanced standing status, so you would apply for the traditional, full-length route. Read more in Can you get an MSW without a BSW?

How competitive is admission to online MSW programs?

It depends on the program. Each accredited program sets its own admission criteria and evaluation process, and CSWE's Board of Accreditation does not regulate admission or enrollment caps (Interpretation Guide, version 7.21.2026, pp. 82–83). Ask each program what it looks for and which decisions it uses, such as conditional admission or a waitlist.
