Online MSW Programs in New Hampshire (NH)

New Hampshire’s in-state online MSW landscape has expanded over the last few years. The University of New Hampshire (UNH) remains the state’s primary option for a CSWE-accredited MSW that can be completed online, and UNH’s academic catalog notes that the online MSW admits students in fall, spring, and summer.

UNH’s online MSW is delivered fully online (no campus visits required), but students should expect a blend of learning formats. In particular, UNH notes that internship seminars and practice courses include weekly synchronous (live) online class sessions (held on Monday or Wednesday evenings).

For students with a BSW who are considering an advanced standing pathway, UNH’s catalog distinguishes start timing by format: advanced standing admissions are every summer for the Durham campus option and every fall for the online option.

In addition to online coursework, students in UNH’s online MSW program complete supervised field internships in their local community and coordinate with UNH’s internship office to identify and secure appropriate placement sites.

Note: Colby-Sawyer College (NH) now offers an online MSW, and the college states that the program has achieved CSWE candidacy. Because candidacy is not the same as full accreditation, students should review how a program’s accreditation status aligns with their licensure goals before enrolling.

Please note: All online MSW programs require students to complete field education at a local health services agency.

The University of New Hampshire’s Department of Social Work offers traditional and advanced standing tracks. The program offers a number of elective focus areas/fields of practice: Advanced Generalist with Electives: Health and Mental Health, Addictions and Substance Abuse, Children, Youth and Families, and Disabilities. The traditional track is 62 credit hours and requires two field placements totaling 1,240 hours. Full-time and extended-time options are available. The online full-time plan is designed to be completed in about 28 months; extended-time pacing is also available. The advanced standing track is 35 credit hours with one field placement; it takes 16 months to complete the full-time program.

In addition to the University of New Hampshire, students residing in the state have several out-of-state online MSW options. There are out-of-state universities with online MSW programs that accept students from New Hampshire. Many of these are fully online, and some require intensives/residencies. Some of these programs do require a limited number of campus visits, which may be ideal for students looking for the flexibility of an online program while still interested in meeting their professors and peers in person.

Some schools charge a single online tuition rate regardless of residency, and others vary by student location. To learn more about a particular program below, click on the school’s name.
