Boise State University Online MSW Programs

Boise State University’ s (BSU) School of Social Work offers an entirely online MSW program with a concentration in Advanced Social Work Practice with Individuals and Families. BSU’s online MSW program has both Full-Program (i.e. traditional) and Advanced Standing tracks, and is offered in both full-time and part-time formats. Classes are delivered mainly asynchronously, though some course instructors conduct synchronous sessions through Blackboard Learn, which enables students to interact and discuss course content with faculty and their peers in real-time. BSU’s online MSW program’s Full-Program track is for students who have completed a degree in a discipline other than social work, while the advanced standing track is designed for students who have earned an undergraduate degree from a CSWE-accredited social work program (restrictions may apply).

Students in the program complete coursework in the following areas:

  • Identifying mental, emotional, and social challenges that people face at the individual, family, organizational, and community-wide levels.
  • Understanding and engaging in policy practice.
  • Advocating for human rights and sociocultural, economic, and environmental justice.
  • Developing and implementing interventions for individuals, families, and group levels, as well as the organizational and community levels.
  • Understanding and engaging with diversity and difference through individual and group work, as well as policy practice.

Full-Program Track

BSU’s Full-Program online MSW program is comprised of 61 credits, which are divided into 43 credits of academic coursework, and 18 credits (or 1000 hours) of supervised field practicum. Students can complete the Full-Program track in two years of full-time study, or three years of part-time study.

The Full-Program track is divided into the foundation courses segment and an Advanced Courses segment. The foundation courses segment is comprised of 30 credits of classes such as Foundation of Social Work Practice, Foundation of Social Welfare Policy, and Ethnicity, Gender, and Class. The advanced courses segment is comprised of 31 credits that cover topics such as Evaluation and Treatment of Mental Disorders and Advanced Research: Program and Practice Evaluation.

Full-Program online MSW students complete one 400-hour foundational field practicum and one advanced 600-hour practicum. Field placements are determined through a collaboration between students, the Director of Field Education, and Field Program Staff.

Advanced Standing Track

The Advanced Standing online MSW track is composed of 37 credits, broken down into 25 credits of academic classes and 12 credits (600 hours) of field practicum. Advanced standing students can complete the program in 12 months of full-time study or 21 months of part-time study.

Boise State University’ s School of Social Work is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and the university is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.
