Our Lady of the Lake University Online MSW Programs

Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) currently offers a CSWE-accredited online MSW program through its Worden School of Social Service. OLLU’s online MSW program has two entry points: the Foundation MSW Program is for students who earned their bachelor’s degree in a field other than social work, while the Concentration MSW Program is for individuals who have already earned their Bachelor’s of Social Work (BSW) from a CSWE-accredited undergraduate program.

OLLU’s program is unique in that it is one of only three MSW programs in the United States that has an emphasis on serving the Hispanic community. As the Hispanic population in America is one of the fastest growing communities in the country, OLLU’s online MSW program is designed to prepare students to work in a wide variety of settings nationwide. Additionally, the program focuses on training students to provide social work services to clients across the lifespan, including members of the elderly community, which is currently the largest community of social service recipients in the nation. These distinctive features of OLLU’s program aim to give students a broad yet focused social work education that helps them effectively serve many different clients struggling with a variety of mental, emotional, physical, and social challenges.

OLLU’s Foundation MSW program requires 57 credits, which students complete over the course of a little over three years. OLLU’s Concentration program requires the completion of 30 course credits over the course of one year and eight months. OLLU’s online MSW program is designed for working adults and classes use asynchronous instruction, meaning students are not required to log on at specific times to attend classes.

In addition, classes are eight weeks long and students only take one class at a time, which can be ideal for adults who work full-time or have other personal and family responsibilities. Program participants interact with course faculty and fellow classmates through discussion forums. Prospective applicants should note that, while OLLU’s online MSW program uses asynchronous instruction, students must still submit class assignments and take exams according to deadlines set by each course instructor.

OLLU’s online MSW program is entirely online in that it does not require its students to attend any on-campus intensives during their enrollment. However, as with all accredited MSW programs, students are required to complete a minimum number of hours of field education at a local approved agency. Foundation students must fulfill 950 hours of field education, which are divided into one foundational 450-hour internship and one 500-hour advanced-level internship. Students in the Concentration program must complete one 500-hour field internship. Students are responsible for finding an eligible agency within their local community; however, once they have identified an agency, OLLU reaches out to confirm eligibility and establish a contract with that agency, and provides support and guidance to students during their field practicum.

OLLU’s online MSW program has a rolling admissions process with set class sizes that fill up early, so students that are considering earning their MSW online should contact an admissions advisor about the next available start date. Application requirements for this program are equivalent to those of OLLU’s on-campus MSW program, and include a personal statement, three letters of recommendation, a professional resume, and transcripts from all post-secondary academic work. A cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.50 or above is required for admission to the Foundation program (a GPA below 2.5 may be acceptable with the inclusion of an explanatory GPA statement). For the Concentration program, a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.00 or above is required (a GPA below 3.00 but above 2.50 may be acceptable with the inclusion of an explanatory GPA statement).

Our Lady of the Lake University’s online MSW program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
