The Rutgers School of Social Work offers a completely online MSW program with a Clinical Social Work concentration. The program features asynchronous instruction, meaning students can complete their assignments and view lecture materials without having to login at specific times. Asynchronous instruction is particularly advantageous for students who have other professional and family obligations. In addition, Rutgers’ online MSW program is unique in that students in their third year have the option to complete their advanced clinical courses through classes with either synchronous or asynchronous instruction. Rutgers’ MSW program is currently ranked in the top 30 by US News and World report.
At present, Rutgers only offers a full-length part-time online MSW program designed for traditional standing students, and does not yet offer a full-time program or a program for advanced standing applicants. The online MSW program takes three years of part-time study to complete, and requires the completion of 60 credits. Rutgers’ online MSW program uses the same curriculum and has the same academic and field education requirements as the campus-based program.
Like all MSW programs, Rutgers’ online MSW program requires its students to complete field education at a local social services agency. Rutgers’ program requires the completion of 1,125 hours of field education; these hours are divided into a foundational 450-hour field internship (which students complete over three semesters) and 675 hours of advanced field education (which students complete over four semesters). Students participate in field education concurrently with practice courses in which students discuss their field experiences with peers and course faculty. The Office of Field Education matches students to field placement sites in their area.
Rutgers University accepts students during their summer, fall, and spring semesters. Applications to Rutgers’ online MSW program are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis. Application requirements for the online program are equivalent to those of the campus-based program, and include a personal statement, a minimum undergraduate GPA, and a strong background in the liberal arts.
Rutgers’ online MSW program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
Disclaimer: Rutgers’ online MSW program does not currently accept students from Alabama, Arkansas, District of Columbia, Maryland, Minnesota, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Washington, Guam, and Puerto Rico.
