Texas State University - San Marcos Online MSW Programs

The Texas State University San Marcos School of Social Work offers a part-time online MSW program with a concentration in Administrative Leadership. The online MSW program uses the same curriculum and syllabi as Texas State’s on-campus MSW program. Texas State offers both a full-length program that requires the completion of 62 credits and takes four years to complete, and an advanced standing track which requires the completion of 36 credits and takes two years to complete. The advanced standing track requires students to have earned a Bachelor of Social Work from a CSWE accredited undergraduate program. Texas State University San Marcos does not accept students from all states, therefore, students consult with an admission advisor to determine if they are eligible for admission before applying.

Coursework in the Administrative Leadership concentration covers topics such as human behavior and psychology, social work ethics and values, social policy, social science research, human diversity, social services, administrative leadership, organizational development, and social justice.

Texas State’s online MSW program requires the completion of 1,100 hours of field education. Students complete 500 hours of field education during the first two years of the program as part of their foundation curriculum, and 600 hours during the last two years of the program as they complete the advanced standing portion of the curriculum. Field placement hours are divided across several semesters, and also incorporate a field seminar during which students discuss their field experiences with faculty and fellow students.

Prior to beginning their field education, students must complete all the coursework necessary to qualify for field placement and set up a pre-registration meeting with the School of Social Work’s Office of Field Practicum in order to determine their assignment to an agency. The Office of Field Practicum’s Field Coordinators assign students to agencies and field instructors after reviewing their field placement application.

Applicants to this program must submit a personal statement, letters of recommendation, a professional resume, and transcripts of all college and graduate coursework. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, and have maintained a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 for their undergraduate coursework. In addition, students must complete Human Biology and Statistics with a passing grade.

Texas State University’s online MSW program is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Texas State is also regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools .
