University of New England (UNE) Online MSW Programs

The University of New England’s (UNE) School of Social Work (which is in UNE’s College of Health Professions) offers an online Master of Social Work (MSW) program that is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), the only organization that accredits MSW programs in the United States. The online MSW program has tracks for both traditional standing students and advanced standing students (those who have completed a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from a CSWE accredited undergraduate program). The traditional standing program has an accelerated option that can be completed in 3 years and a part-time option that can be completed in 4 years. The advanced standing program also has an accelerated option that can be completed in ~16 months and a part-time option that can be completed in ~2 years.

UNE’s online MSW program has two different concentrations to choose from: one for students interested in Clinical Social Work and one for students interested in Social Work Policy. The Clinical Practice: Individual, Families, and Groups (IFG) concentration is for students who are interested in working in areas related to: health and mental health, substance abuse, trauma, and other clinical settings. The Community Practice: Organizational and Community Practice (OCP) concentration is for students interested in careers in social work policy and analysis, program management, community development, advocacy, and other related areas.

The online MSW program at UNE has courses that are 100% online (no campus visits are required) and the majority of instruction is asynchronous. This is ideal for working professionals who may not be able to attend weekly online classes that are held in real-time (synchronous instruction), as is required for some other online MSW programs. Students can complete their coursework at their own convenience, as long as they turn in their assignments by the due dates.

For field education at UNE, students have an active role in choosing their own field placements; they are not matched to an agency as is the case for some other online MSW programs. This helps to ensure that students find the best-fit for them in terms of both an agency and a field instructor. This is advantageous for students who would prefer to complete their field education in a specific type of agency and/or in a particular location (for example close to public transportation). To help with the process, students work with a field planner, who is a full-time field education faculty member at UNE.

UNE’s online MSW programs are regionally accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
