Online MSW Programs in Minnesota

The Barbara Solomon School of Social Work and Human Services of Walden University is currently the only institution in the state of Minnesota that offers an online Master of Social Work (MSW) program. Most of the MSW program’s instruction is delivered asynchronously, allowing students to complete readings, learning modules and assignments on their own schedule – provided, of course, that they meet respective deadlines. Beyond the online coursework, Walden also requires online MSW students to complete field education at local health services agencies. Although students are not expected to come to the Walden campus, they are required to attend two four-day in-person residencies held in various locations across the United States.

Please note: All online MSW programs require students to complete field education at local health services agencies.

The online MSW program from Walden University’s Barbara Solomon School of Social Work and Human Services offers two tracks, traditional and advanced standing, as well as four concentrations: advanced clinical practice, military social work, social work in healthcare and social work with children and families. The traditional track is 92 quarter credits, requires 1,000 hours of field education and can be completed in 36 months. The advanced-standing track is 55 quarter credits, requires 1,000 hours of field education and can be completed in 21 months.

In addition to Walden University, students residing in Minnesota have several other online MSW options. There are 23 universities with online MSW programs that accept students from Minnesota and the majority of these programs are fully online, meaning they do not require students to visit campus while earning their degrees. Five of these programs do necessitate a limited number of visits, and one of these programs may be the ideal option for students who want the flexibility of an online program yet would still like to meet their professors and classmates in person.

Several online MSW programs also offer students from Minnesota the same tuition rate as in-state students, so aspiring social workers should research as many of their options as possible. To learn more about a particular program below, click on the name of the school.
