Online MSW students at MSU Denver can choose from two degree types: traditional and advanced standing. While the traditional track is open to students from all undergraduate backgrounds, the advanced standing track requires applicants to have obtained, within the last six years, an undergraduate degree in social work from a program accredited by CSWE. The traditional track consists of 60 credit hours which can be completed in two years of full-time study or four years of part-time study. The advanced standing track consists of 36 credit hours, which can be completed in one year full-time or up to two years part-time. All courses, including electives, must be taken in a required sequential order. The curriculum is arranged so that students complete foundation courses before advancing to concentrations.

All of the coursework for MSU Denver’s online MSW program is available through the Internet. The program does not require students to make any visits to campus. However, students must complete 1,080 hours of field placement at a local health services agency for the traditional track or 600 hours for the advanced standing track. MSU Denver’s Office of Field Education will assist students in finding appropriate venues to conduct their field placement.

In order to be accepted into the program, applicants must have a minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.0. GRE scores are not required for admission, nor are there any work experience requirements. Applications will need to include: an essay, a professional resume, three letters of recommendation, official transcripts from all previously attended academic institutions, a professional history form, and an application fee. Applicants to the traditional track will need to include a prerequisite course content form, and those to the advanced standing track will need a case study.
