Rutgers Online MSW Program

The Rutgers School of Social Work offers a 100% online Master of Social Work (MSW) program with flexible asynchronous coursework and structured deadlines. Students complete their courses online and complete in-person practicum education at approved agencies. Rutgers states that the online MSW uses the same curriculum content, faculty and degree requirements as the campus-based program. (socialwork.rutgers.edu)

Rutgers now offers multiple online MSW pathways. Regular standing students may complete the 60-credit online MSW in two years of full-time study or three years of part-time study. Advanced standing students complete 39 credits and may complete the online advanced standing pathway in four semesters. (socialwork.rutgers.edu)

Students in the Rutgers MSW program select one specialization: Clinical Social Work or Management and Policy (MAP). The Clinical Social Work specialization focuses on direct work with individuals, families and groups, while the MAP specialization focuses on management, planning, policy and organizational practice. (socialwork.rutgers.edu)

Like all CSWE-accredited MSW programs, Rutgers’ online MSW includes practicum education. Regular standing students complete 900 total practicum hours, including 400 generalist practicum hours and 500 advanced practicum hours. Advanced standing students complete 500 advanced practicum hours. Rutgers notes that students must have availability during regular Monday through Friday business hours for practicum placements, and placements cannot be completed only on evenings and weekends. Rutgers’ MSW program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Rutgers also notes that students interested in licensure should review the requirements in the state where they plan to practice, because licensure rules vary by state. (socialwork.rutgers.edu)
