University of Alaska Anchorage Online MSW Programs

The University of Alaska at Anchorage’s (UAA) School of Social Work offers an online MSW program with an Advanced Generalist concentration. This program has both traditional and advanced standing tracks. The traditional standing track is comprised of 62 credits and 960 hours of field practicum that students can complete over the course of two years of full-time study or three to four years of part-time study. The advanced standing track is composed of 35 credits and one 480-hour field placement, which students can complete in one year of full time study or two years of part time study.

While all courses are delivered online, students must travel to their field placements, and also attend campus intensives. Traditional standing students must attend two campus visits, while advanced standing students must attend one.

The MSW Field Education Coordinator determines field placement sites for all students within the University of Alaska’s online MSW program. Students who are accepted into the program must fill out a field education application packet that the Field Education Office then uses to determine their placements.

Currently, UAA’s online MSW program only accepts students who live in Alaska.

Traditional Standing Track

The University of Alaska’s traditional standing online MSW program requires students to progress through both a Foundation Curriculum and a Concentration Curriculum. Full-time students take one year to complete the Foundation Curriculum, and one year for the Concentration Curriculum, while part-time students in this track complete both the Foundation and the Concentration Curricula over the course of two years, totaling four years.

Classes that are part of the Foundation Curriculum include Social Work Policy and Services, Human Behavior and the Social Environment, Human Diversity in Social Work Practice, Practice I: Individuals, Practice II: Families and Groups, Practice III: Organizations and Communities, and Social Work Practicum I and II. Courses that are part of the Concentration Curriculum include Social Policy for Advanced Generalist Practice, Program Evaluation, Advanced Generalist Practice I: Individuals, Advanced Generalist Practice II: Families and Groups, Advanced Generalist Practice III: Organizations and Communities, and an MSW Research Seminar.
